OUR Ukrainian Friends

H.U.G.S

🇨🇦 (Humanitarian Ukraine Grassroots Support) — Kharkiv, Ukraine

Founded by Paul and Mac Hughes from Canada just weeks after the full-scale invasion, H.U.G.S. has become a lifeline for thousands of vulnerable Ukrainians. Recognised by local authorities and working in partnership with many NGOs, H.U.G.S. identifies and assists those most at risk — providing food, shelter, vehicles, and vital supplies.

At the heart of their work is the SMART programme (Sports, Music, Art, Recreation and Technology), led by director Alona Krasnikova, which supports displaced and traumatised young people in Kharkiv. SMART offers safe spaces for creativity, social connection, and healing.

The H.U.G.S. Garage in Kharkiv is another cornerstone of their mission. Staffed by skilled Ukrainian and international volunteer mechanics, it services and equips ambulances, 4×4s, and delivery vehicles used for humanitarian missions. These vehicles travel into hard-hit and front-line areas, bringing life-saving aid. The garage also acts as the team’s hub — a place where volunteers gather, repair, load, and send vehicles on new missions almost daily.

Among the many lives touched by H.U.G.S. is Chara, a blind rescue dog from Izyum who has become their beloved mascot — a symbol of resilience, hope, and kindness for everyone she meets.

From Person to Person

Charitable Foundation — Kyiv, Ukraine

The From Person to Person Foundation delivers humanitarian and psychological support to civilians and communities most affected by war. Founded in 2022, their team of specialists provides aid across Ukraine — from Kyiv and Chernihiv to Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia — ensuring help reaches those who need it most.

Their work includes:

  • Delivery of humanitarian and medical supplies to front-line regions
  • Rehabilitation and recovery projects for displaced people and those affected by trauma
  • Repairs and restoration of homes in de-occupied territories
  • Psychological care through their “Talk to Me?” programme, offering free online therapy sessions for Ukrainians coping with the stress of war
  • Art and cultural workshops for orphaned and displaced children, helping them express, heal, and find moments of joy amid hardship

From Person to Person continues to expand its reach, coordinating aid shipments from across Europe and uniting professionals from diverse backgrounds to make a meaningful difference every day.

Cross Charity

✝️ CROSS Charity (Khrest) — Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine

Founded in 2014 by Vitaliy and Natalia Khmelnytskyi, the CROSS (Khrest) Charitable Organization is built on Christian principles of compassion and service.

Their volunteers embody the words of Matthew 25:35–36 — providing food, clothing, and comfort to those in need, visiting the sick and prisoners, and supporting families affected by conflict.

Since 2022, CROSS has focused much of its work on supporting Ukraine’s defenders and their families through military chaplaincy, counselling, and practical assistance.

The team also delivers aid to civilians in front-line areas, runs programmes for children in orphanages and hospitals, and supports those rebuilding their lives after captivity or displacement.

With a transparent and accountable approach, CROSS demonstrates that faith in action can bring hope, healing, and light even in the darkest times.Charitable Foundation — Kyiv, Ukraine

OUR STORY

Helping Our Ukrainian Friends is a community of people across England, Poland and Ukraine dedicated to helping Ukraine win the war against Russia

It originated in friendships forged through football when four of the team met in Donetsk in 2012 when England played Ukraine in the Euros. It now unites a team working in Sheffield, Dronfield, Peterborough, Stamford, Surrey, Gliwice, Rivne, Odesa, Kharkiv and Kyiv.

Our first delivery of aid was in March 2022, taking medical supplies to the Kyiv Heart Institute as Russian invaders threatened to encircle Kyiv. Since then the UK team have made 12 humanitarian aid deliveries, while the Polish and Ukrainian team has taken these supplies on to front line communities.

So far the project has raised £250,000 and delivered over 50 tonnes of aid, plus 37 generators and thousands of lights, batteries, camping stoves, tourniquets and over 2,000 Christmas and Easter Gift Boxes for Ukrainian children. It has helped individual families and schools across Ukraine and a charity for people with hearing difficulties in Odesa. In December 2023 we also drove two ambulances out to Kyiv for delivery to military units.

We are also actively supporting Summer Camps in Poland providing respite and counselling to Ukrainian widows and their children. The UK team have helped with three camps so far, supporting them financially and with volunteers. Members of the Polish and Ukrainian team organise the camps and provide professional counselling services.Helping Our Ukrainian Friends (we affectionately refer to this as HOUF) operates by collecting and delivering donations from UK communities to Poland and to western Ukraine and Kyiv. These are then transferred to Polish and Ukrainian lorries. We also buy products in Poland and Ukraine for delivery to front line communities.

Helping Our Ukrainian Friend's (HOUF) programme for 2024 includes two major collection campaigns that will be delivered in June and December and two trips to Kyiv to purchase supplies in country. Key supplies we intend to deliver, as well as food, clothes and medicines, include 4x4 vehicles, camping stoves, tourniquets, chain saws and LED lights. We will also support another Summer Camp for war widows and their families in June 2024.
We urgently need to raise a further £20,000 to achieve these aims. And we need to make sure Ukraine’s fight to uphold democratic values and the security of Europe remains top of our national priorities.
